Longboat Key established its first post office in the year 1907,but it wasn’t incorporated until 1955. The true history of the area, however, dates back to a time long past when the only area residents were the Timucuan and Caloosa Indians.

By the 1500's, the Spanish had found the area, however, the true occupation did not begin until the early 1900's when the first homes were built. Despite becoming a city in the 1950's, Longboat Key didn't experience quick growth until the 60's and 70's when the area became recognized for its beauty and solitude. Today, Longboat Key has strict policies on growth in order to protect the area from over-development and a loss of the area’s true beauty.
